History and Facts About ABWAMission StatementTo bring together business women of diverse occupations and to provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others grow personally and professionally through leadership, education, networking support and national recognition. History of ABWAOn September 22, 1949, Hilary A. Bufton, Jr., a Kansas City, Missouri businessman, founded the American Business Women's Association to support business women by helping them reach their educational and career goals. ABWA has dedicated more than 50 years to women's education and provided workplace skills and career-development training for more than 545,000 members. Chief Executive OfficerToday, Mr. Bufton's daughter, Carolyn Bufton Elman, carries out his vision as Chief Executive Officer of the American Business Women's Association. Under her direction, ABWA has produced comprehensive professional development programs for thousands of working women. Ms. Elman is a recognized leader in American business and is actively sought for her insight into women's workplace issues. She serves on the Board of Advisors for the Women On Their Way program for Wundham Hotel and Resorts. Leadership StructureThe National Board of Directors governs the affairs, policies and business of ABWA on behalf of its members. Board members also serve as trustees of the Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Fund, ABWA's national scholarship trust. In addition, members can attain a grant to learn new skills inside or outside of their profession through a Business Skills Grant. Professional Development Programs, Awards and ScholarshipsABWA believes professional development and training are key to helping women grow personally and professionally. ABWA supports professional development by providing continuing education programs and products which enhance members' business skills. Members receive discounts on a variety of products and services, including career-focused books and audio tapes, seminars by national presenters, and computer application classes. ABWA also supports education through scholarships. Since its creation in 1953, total scholarships awarded through the Stephen Bufton Memorial Educational Fund have exceeded $14 million. Top Ten Business Women of ABWA and American Business Woman of ABWA AwardsEach year, ABWA recognizes 10 ABWA members as the Top Ten Business Women of ABWA, one of whom is chosen as the American Business Woman of ABWA. These women demonstrate how their involvement in ABWA has contributed to significant career achievements. They are recognized at the ABWA's national conference. |
